What are retainers?
Retainers are thin plastic trays that fit around your teeth and are worn to maintain their current position. After orthodontic treatment, your teeth have a tendency to move back slowly to their original (misaligned position). For this reason, we recommend wearing retainers during for life in order to maintain your straighter smile.
Can I eat and drink with retainers on?
We recommend removing your retainers prior to eating or drinking anything other than clear unsugared liquids. Our retainers will not stain with coloured drinks; however, trapping colour or sugar between retainers and your teeth may cause stains and/or cavities.
How long should I wear my retainers for?
If you have just finished your orthodontic treatment, you should wear your retainers for 22 hours per day for 6 or more months. Afterward, you may wear your retainers for 8 (or more) hours each day.
How long will each set of retainers last?
Your retainers are fragile, and made of thin medical grade plastic. As your teeth continuously try to move back to their original position, your retainers will stretch over time. It's best to change your retainers every 6 months to prevent any orthodontic relapse.
If relapse occurs, you may need to create new impressions to fabricate new retainers that have moved to a new position.
